First Time Private Renting (except student lets)

Hi
I've almost finished my degree (whew!) and don't fancy moving back in with my Mum and Dad for any amount of time over about a week! My current housemate and I are going to move to Manchester and rent a flat there privately. We currently rent from a private landlord who deals in student lettings, but have never dealt with a proper letting agency or private landlord, and I just had a question:

Is your credit history checked before you're allowed to move in to a property? I've heard that they do check your credit history, and I'm a little concerned as I've had a couple of money problems in my time as a student, and I don't want these to affect me, as they're not indicative of my life with a full-time earning job!

Thanks

Many agencies will do a credit check before allowing you to rent one of their properties.
    Gone ... or have I?

Speak with the letting agent and be entirely honest with them about what is in your credit history and ask their advice.

I am sure they often come across loads of people with bad credit histories and so will know what's OK and what's a bit iffy.

Depending on your financial situation they may ask for a guarantor. In some cases I've known them to ask for the whole 6's months rent in advance
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

Thier `advice` will be the requirment of a guarantor , no more no less

yeah, I was wondering how plausible it would be to say to them 'i may have adverse credit because i've been a student for 5 years, but i have money now'.
i think my bank (Abbey, ugghhh) may have messed up my credit at the same time they messed up my bank account, but i couldn't be too sure. thanks for everyone's help, though! looks like i'll be paying a visit to the bank of mum and dad for guarantor means!

What area are you looking for in manchester?

The credit agency i use only really fail you if you have had a CCJ. Each agent is different but the best thing is to be upfront and honest.
