Vista compatability question. Ooh, and first post too...!

Alreet guys.

I'm a long-time MSE-lurker, but this is my first post. I could do with some techie opinions, and being a cynical sod I don't generally trust assistants in shops!

I'm a keen musician and I do a lot of recording on my 4-year old Dell, which isn't ideal, but i manage. The problem I have is that my PC has started behaving in a slightly odd way (stays out late, comes home smelling of aftershave, that kinda thing...lol) and I've got a funny feeling it's gonna die on me soon and I'm gonna need a new one.

My issue is that [STRIKE]most[/STRIKE] all my music software is possibly, not exactly 100% kosher and while it works fine on my XP-equipped PC, I've heard nasty rumblings about Vista-compatability. Not being especially techie myself, I've got no idea if these rumblings are completely accurate or a load of old pony.

What do you guys reckon? Do you reckon my allegedly shifty software could be a problem with Vista? In which case, I gotta get me a new PC with XP sharpish, while they're still sellin' the damn things...

Cheers in advance,

Russ

  • Hi "If" it works with Vista should be fine it won't report you, hehe. You may need to check the software out and if there is a Vista option available to you. For the failing drive try out www.grc.com for his spinrite software will fix soft faults on a drive, you might find it in your collection somewhere.

If you've managed to obtain Mickey Mouse software for XP, then I'm sure you'll find the Vista versions easily enough. Not that I advocate you doing such a thing of course.

There is no surefire way of knowing what is and isn't compatible. The best advice I can give is to check out the software creators' websites and see if you can find out for yourself.

Hi Russ - your wayward PC may have picked up a virus or two, while knocking back the wire and limes  , on the nights out

If it is just running slow etc run thru the first 4 posts here ...

If it is running slow - look at getting more memory, use the scanner at http://www.crucial.com/ - it will tell you what memory you have and what more can be fitted.

If the drive is knocking, look at getting a new drive - the disk should be able to tell if it's health is failing - On Desktop >> right click iver "My Computer" icon >> select Manage >> Storage >> Disk management - >> Status column...

The run through the disk tools Right Clock over C:drive from above select Properties >> General Tab Disk clean up burtton
then Tools tab >> run thru Error Checking tick all boxes then defrag

HTH may save you the cost of a new PC ...

Poor people spend then save what's left.
  • Cheers for your thoughts guys.

My music PC has never been hooked up to this here t'intyweb and it's got a fairly good virus checker on there, so hopefully it doesn't have the digital clap! Think I'll double check tho.

I think upgrading could be the best plan tho. I really don't wanna have to shell out on a new PC, and if I can breathe life back into it, then I reckon that's the best plan. Why didn't I think of that?!

I've been pretty lax on maintenance, being a pretty lax person, but I think I'd better get it all checked out. I miss the days at uni, when I had loads of 'mates with a mate who's knows this bloke who can get you whatever software you want...!'

    Cheers amigos
