Hiring a Car at 18, HELP!!!!
Options
Hi Everyone,
A position has come up within a company that would involve working overseas in Europe. As it's only 1 Hr on the plane I would be coming home most weekends. As I live around 1.5 hrs away from my nearest airports, (Manchester, Leeds Bradford and East Midlands) getting a taxi there and back would probably cost £100 a time, and I wouldn't want to inconvenience family and friends each time I come back, so I have been looking at hiring a car from the airport, driving it home, using it at the weekends and then dropping it off at the airport as I return to work. I have looked at prices and it would work out roughly £180 for the weekend for a decent car, saving me the taxi bill, as well as insurance on my current car and also maintenance etc. However, every company I have looked at wants a minimum age of 25, and I am only 18. Does anyone know of a company that will allow me to hire a vehicle?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

No.
When I was 18 (not long ago), not a chance.
If you are going to find anywhere, it's going to be a small local company rather than a big company at an airport - but I really wouldn't be spending alot of time looking as I'm just not sure your going to find anywhere.
National Express, Megabus and the trains perhaps?0 -
Didn't think there would be much chance if I am honest, like you say I may have to look at the train and then get picked up from a nearby station, just means I will have to keep the car. I think I may get that Pay-As-You-Go car insurance to cut costs a little.
Thanks alot!0 -

i'm sure most pay-as-you-go car insurances require you to be over 21
correct me if i im wrong0 -
Norwich Union don't but i got a quote last night and it was more than I was paying now with limited milage and obviously additional costs!
Think I'll keep the car and use the train!0 -
could you not park your current car at the airport during the week? that way it would be very convienent for getting to and from home and i can't imagine would cost anywhere near the £180 for hiring a car.The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0

The thing is that I may not be coming home every weekend, which means I would be spending money on parking that I don't really want to. I suppose I can try out all the options and see what happens.
Thanks!0 -
maybe one of the parking firms would give you a discount on a monthly passs or something.
this website does a quote for a month at manchester airport for £120. whether they would let you remove and replace the car is something you'd need to discuss with them but seems like a good option. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
Have you considered buying a cheap banger? Use it for as long as you need it, use temporary insurance cover, and sell it on when you're done with it.
Look around hard and you shouldn't have any difficulty buying a banger for £100. The real killer will be insurance unfortunately. I know https://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk does short term cover, and there may be other places.0
