xbox repair nightmare

360 Repair Nightmare
I took my sons xbox 360 into my local computer shop for repair because the disc drawer would not open, they told me the min charge was £50-00 and they would send the 360 away and it would be back the next week.
Got a phone call today to inform me it was repaired and the charge was £50.00
Got the 360 home the drawaer still wont open, there is a noise from the unit that was not there prior to the repair and the red light on the front of the unit is flashing.

I think the 360 is now totally bu##ered, what are my next steps regarding this shop and getting the 360 repaired.

I have a feeling that they will send it away again and i will get a phone call informing me that the repair cost will be £100+

any advice / legally what are my rights

All my son wants is the xbox repaired for the £50-00 we have paid

cheers

take it back to the shop. they should send it off again and fix the drawer without charge.
however if the noise comes down to a problem due to wear & tear and not related to the drawer issue/fix they are within their rights to charge you to fix it
If not you should see the ttrading standards or cab

  • the first thing you should ahve done was call microsoft, all xbox 360s now have a 3 year warranty and they would send you a box, you put the 360 in that box(excluding wires, controllers and hard drive) and it can take up to 3 weeks they would send you a refurbished one. See if the void warranty stickers have been pealed off, if they ahvent then you can send it to microsoft without a problem. how much red lights do you have on the front?
  • Yeah, I guess the shop invalidated your warrantee, so your kinda stuck.

I believe the 3 year warranty is only for the 3 red lights. All other issues are the standard 1 year warranty.

If its in warranty, take it back to where you bought it and get a replacement. If its out of warranty and the warranty stickers haven't been removed, contact microsoft - you will have to pay.

Where did the shop send it away to? I wonder if they sent it to Microsoft anyway and you got a different refurb back in it's place? It's not unheard of for Microsoft to send out replacements that are dead from the word go. Do you know if it IS actually your original box?

I would be going back to the shop that did the repair. Seems a bit odd to me that the repairers sent it out like that, makes me think they haven't even looked at it and just swapped it for another refurb and the refurb has other problems.

If it IS your box then perhaps their repair has compromised the solder surrounding the chips which has then caused the red light issue. Not saying that's the case, but I'd be questioning why the box went off with one problem and came back with 3.

If ALL sections of the red light are flashing, then that indicates a video error....check the cables are properly inserted at the back first. If they are, then the video chip could be corrupted.

If 3 sections are red then it's a hardware failure which means a dead box.

I'm assuming the box is out of warranty because you took it to a local independant repairer rather than go through Microsoft or back to point of purchase?

I started replying eariler on my laptop I musn't have submited it.

What is the warrenty situation with the 360? is it still within 12 months? then it is the responsibilty of the shop you bought it from. Microsoft will also deal with them. If you receive the 3 red light error roing of death then microsoft will deal with that for 3 years from purchase as it is a hardware fault with the 360.

Why did you take it to a computer shop? especially when they send it away you could have done that with microsoft.

so you paid for a service fromt he computer shop and they havnt fulfilled the contract so they are responsible for fullfilling it you have 2 options go back to the shop and give them another try at sorting it out they screwed it up didnt they so there should be no charge. or go to the shop and ask them to refund the money as it hasnt been fixed.

Once you have the money contact microsoft and arrange for it to be returned to them, they will treat it as warenty void and charge you £65 to repair it. but you should get a working 360 back.

Personally I would get the money back and return it to microsoft rather than letting the shop sort it out for you again.

If it's out of warranty, you've got nothing to lose by asking MS. From a legal standpoint it is the retailer you bought it from who is responsible for repairing faults (without charge) and that's who you should turn your attention to if MS can't help (also get your money back from the pc repair shop).

why would you let a pc repair shop fix a console?

you should have contacted Microsoft, there customer services for me at least have always been spot on.
