Latop not getting power

My mate asked me to speed up his laptop for him. Job was quite simple. Just removed Norton Anti-Virus & hey presto!

She hadnt used it in over a year. Anyway now when the AC adapter is pluged in it is not charging the battery or powering the laptop. I noticed suddenly the battery icon appeared in the system tray. Batttery then drained. Cannot turn it on now. Put it on charge overnight but has not charged. Tried different AC adaptor & still no joy. Could the battery have given up the ghost as it hasnt been used for so long?

Any suggestions appreciated.

doesn't matter if the battery is ok or not, & the fact there was some power after a year suggests it still works. Does the laptop start with the battery removed & plugged in?
Is the power led lit on the adapter?
are you sure the adapter is the correct one?

    No can't see one.

It's the one she was sold with it & it worked when I first plugged it in last night.
  • What laptop is it?
I have a Dell Lattitude D600 which has an identical problem, unfortunatly in my case its a short on the mainboard itself, and not an uncommon problem for this machine. For the dell, the laptop adapter immediately shuts down when plugged in.
I know this post doesn't help much, but your not alone with such a problem.

It does seem strange it was working for while then stopped. I thought possibly that the adapter was not working and the start up you did was on battery power.
You need to be certain the adapter is working. Laptops are fussy in the fact that if the power is incorrect it will not start. This is for protection if the adapter is incorrect and supplies a higher or lower voltage than the lappy requires it will not start.
Have you checked the connector on the laptop to make sure it isn't loose?

  • It's an Acer Travelmate 230.

No it was definitely powering from the adapter at first & later the battery. I think it may be the adapter. I think I might ask the electrician at work to test the adapter.
