    Hi caravanlover,

The families board might be the best place to get help with this as there are a number of regulars on that board who home school so I'll move your thread across.

In the meantime have a read of these old threads from that board:

  • How old are your children, caravanlover?
I have 2 children- 12 and 14. The 12 year old is in school- happy and doing well but my 14 year old daughter had an absolutely horrendous time of things at her school. In the end we deregistered her last year (she was 13 then) and she's now homeschooled. The basic principles apply whatever the age and it's not so scary once you've taken the plunge! If you have any specific questions, I'm more than happy to share our experiences, for what they're worth!

  • Hey home educator here! lol don't worry there are alot of us out there really, i teach my boys at home dereg the eldest over a year ago now my other was too young to have started school anyway. Best thing i ever did. If you want any advice about anything specific just give my a pm and i'll do my best as it is scary when you first start out. Wont take long though and it will be like they never went.
Best site for legal advice etc is http://www.education-otherwise.org/ bit of a pain to navigate though. But you can join them and they can help you out if you need any help (legal wise) they also send you out a card to show any truency patrol etc that your a home educator. Have fun you will spend hours researching.
Lapbooks are a great learning tool, education city and study dog (american though) so many learning tools of the net and your local library they really isn't anything that they do in school that you can't do at home and so much more. Look for your local home ed group they are spread around the country so your more than likley to have one local to you, they meet up for day trips out etc, Education otherwise will be able to put you in touch with your group.
  • I'd second that about checking out Education Otherwise. The template letter on there is the one we used when deregistering our daughter.

Another site I found really helpful is this one

    http://home-ed.info/index.html

There are lots of links to many different aspects of HE.
As lindseykim says it can seem a bit scary but you'll be amazed how quickly it becomes part of normal life!

  • Another home ed here. Hiya. :)
I took DS1 out when he was six. He's 18 now and working but I'm still teaching DS2 who is 14 and has never been to school.
I think there is rather a lot of home educators on these boards. And I'd agree that education otherwise is very useful when you start out.

Hope it all works out for you. ;) We've never regretted our decision and I was rather delighted to overhear DS1 saying he would prefer to HE his own children when he has them one day. I guess he enjoyed the adventure too then.:D

I deregistered 3 of mine ages 9 6 4 just a couple of weeks ago, my youngest wont ever go to nursery or school. there is tons of information on the net, worksheets projects etc.

have a look at this thread, it was running untill resently there is pleanty of info and links.

google also has a teacher specific search engine.

also worth a note, most if not all of the the sites offering worksheets are making them with software from these people, schools use it as well.

also chanel 4 news ran a story on home ed,
