Pre Reg Vehicles

I`ve got a good offer on a new Fiesta from a national UK dealer.
The only thing is the car is "pre -reg",which I take to mean, that it`s already registered to the garage, and if I buy it,I`ll be the second owner.
There`s only about 10 delivery miles on the clock and it`s classed as brand new.

Maybe some of my fellow MSE would like to comment about the pros and cons of buying a "pre-reg" car.

Unless I`m missing something I can`t see that it`ll make any difference at all.
A new car is
a new car.

dealers usually pre-reg cars to meet monthly quotas. Other possibility is that may have a been a demonstrator. Again, usually a good thing as they tend to haev the better colours and few extras fitted.

obviously, you mustn't pay the full price as you are the 2nd owner.

  • You need to ask at what point you get the logbook. Authorised pre reg's from the manuf'r allow the dealers to hand ownership over to you at transaction point and you get your name added to the logbook as the current owner straight away.

Unauthorised pre reg's done by the dealer without the manuf'rs knowledge will usually have 3-6mths logbook retention...meaning they won't let you have the logbook for that period..they have to withold it from you to stop you alerting the manuf'r or the DVLA to the fact the car has been sold earlier than allowed and to show you as a new owner. If they have registered stock to help them hit their sales targets, they are supposed to run pre reg's as demo's for 3-6mths (term depends on the brand and the dealer's contract)...hence them having to stop you having your name put on the logbook somehow..as they've sold it to you earlier than they were allowed to under their franchise contract agreement with the manuf'r.

It remains illegal to withold a logbook from a customer...it should reflect the new owners name and address as soon as possible, so you need to ask this question. You wouldn't allow someone selling you a used car to keep the legal document for it in their name for a few months, so don't do it on a new one!

We don't touch these deals....and you need to check with your insurer first if you find the car won't come its logbook, as not all will cover you if you cannot honestly say on your insurance application that you are the named owner of the vehicle from the DVLA's point of view. If you have to claim on your insurance in the retention period the insurer may choose not to pay up at all once ownership is shown to lie elsewhere according to the logbook, or may only pay up to the company named as the owners on the logbook....so talk to them first before you buy, if you find out you cannot have the logbook for some time.

Hope that helps! Just ask the questions...

The vehicle was registered to the dealer on 30/9/07,and the log book is available to be sent to Swansea straight away to register me as the new owner (keeper).

the other question i would like to ask is about air-conditioning.
Is it all it`s cracked up to be or are there any dis advantages?

I have a new fiesta and also had a 54 reg fiest. They both have air con, its great in the summer, but it really does eat into the petrol.
I dont know if its just the fiesta or what, but use it economically is all I can suggest.
I love Fiesta's....I have had 3 in the past 6 years, and they always do a great deal on trading up!

It causes the same amount of drag/fuel usage as it does having the windows/sunroof open.
  • i think it feels a bit more than that, you have to put the foot down a bit more when taking off,etc... but definatly worth it in the summer, put the windows up,switch on the a/c and its ice cold almost instantly.

buying a pre reg car doesnt realy have any cons, it just means the dealer has been paid a bonus for registering it or it counts towards a target number they need to register to gain a bonus, this means they can pass on a bigger saving to yourself
  • I bought a fiesta from broadspeed about a year ago which was a pre-registered model (56 plate). I went to all the local dealers and they couldn't come anywhere near the price I got it for. It was delivered (on time) from a garage in Leeds (over 400 miles away - so this was the mileage on the clock when I signed for it). I got the log book after 3 months.

I would buy a new car exactly the same way again - give local garages the chance to price-match - but then have no hesitation in going through the internet purchase route.

I did give the local garage a chance to match the price for a NEW reg Fiesta the same as from www.drivethedeal.co.uk

To my utter anstonishment they did.
Signed up and ordered for 1st March when the new 08 plate comes out.
I still can`t believe they did the deal.
Just goes to show with a recession round the corner plus intense competition from the internet they will give you a good deal
    now they have to.

Don`t forget, for years in this country we were ripped of with new car prices
    now we can bite back.
