fiat punto 60 1.2 car sensor?

hi just been to kwick fit as i thought i had a problem with the rear of the exhaust. i was told it wasn't anything to do with the exhaust and that it was maybe to do with sensors beeing out of alighnment or possibly simply the spark plug. i have little money and realy rely on the car. would it be worth getting a spark plug and trying that first? roughly how much would it cost to rectify if a sensor was out. oh they also said that it sounds like it's only running on 3 cylinders. any help advice would be greatly appreciated.

the car seems to be lacking power i have to give lots of revs to get anywhere and lots of loud spluttering noises the greater the speed the louder the noises

have a check of the spark plugs to see if theres any damage or burn marks but i doubt that they will cause that problem
