Multiple Entries

My son and I used an ATM machine here in Spain to get some cash. Instead of a single transaction, both of our statements show 16 seperate entries for the same transaction totalling thousands of pounds. My son's bank, Abbey, have reassured him that they will sort it out and give him compensation, but Barclaycard have treated my problem as a fraud, have cancelled my card and have stated that they cannot guarantee anything and maybe I would have to pay the interest and the charges on each transaction, until they are assured that it is no fault of mine. I have pointed out that Barclaycard are supposed to have systems in place to protect the cardholder from multiple transactions, but for some reason this has failed. Considering the maximum amount allowed is only 300 euros, how can it register 4,800 euros instead? It seems like I will have to claim from the Deutsche Bank in Spain, if I am to recover all my costs, but considering the circumstances, I cannot see why that should be, Why are the two Banks handling the matter so differently? I have to have the inconvenience of waiting for a form to arrive to state that I am 'not guilty' and then wait for the Indian Aftercare service to sort it out, and in the meantime I have no credit card facility. Where do I go from here?
