You can get Mozilla Sunbird for free, its's a claendar application so you can set reminders for specific times and dates.
If you run Mozilla Thunderbird for email you can download Lightning which is a calendar app that integrates with Thunderbird. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
A Google search for "Popup reminders" brings up many, not sure how good they are though!0

If it's a home PC they're far more likely to have Outlook Express which doesn't have the calendar functions itIt's my problem, it's my problem

There appears to be a lot of services coming up that offer assistance in managing your life in the "Getting Things Done (GTD)" approach. A lot of people are using a combination of online tools to help remind, manage to-do lists, etc. Some of the popular tools include: twitter, sandy, jott and remember the milk.
Twitter is a social networking site - but it has some useful extension tools. For example, you can use it to remind you to do something by sending you an instant message to your MSN/AOL/etc account. So if you have MSN open, you will get a message from twitter at a time/date you specified. http://twitter.com
Sandy is an email assistant. You basically email this "online entity" and it can remind you by sending you an email at a specific time (I think). http://www.iwantsandy.com/
Jott converts voice into text. People ring a number and speak out something they want to record/remember/be reminded of, and it transcribes it to text. You can then automate this service to do specific things with the text - ideal if you're in the car and want to remember to do something. Don't know whether this is US-only but worth looking at. http://www.jott.com
Remember the milk is great. You can store your reminders online and get it to sms you (and possibly email you) at specific times/dates to remind you of whatever you wish. If you're really savvy, it has an API and can work with quicksilver/launchy to send reminders easily without the need to login via a web browser. http://www.rememberthemilk.com
I would recommend looking on https://www.lifehacker.com and searching around for these tools. A lot of people configure the services to work together in a very efficient manner passing data between each of them. With these tools you're to-do lists, reminders, etc are all online so you're not tied to one PC.
If you want to get a reminder pop-up on your PC via email, you could configure your gmail account with thunderbird and you'll see a "new message" pop-up appear when you get an email.
I would recommend trying out the tools and finding out which works best for you. Some will be more useful for different people.
Hope this helps.0
