Yes Paypal are a law unto themselves and much much worse since ebay bought them out. If you pass a magic figure for selling - think its £5,000 they automatically assume you are a crook or money launderer - no matter it migh have taken you 10 years to get there. They then make you jump through several hoops - they wanted me to send proof of my residence to Salt LAke City! They want you to identify your annual sales and where your bank is etc

Again, this is a very common misunderstanding, and an unhelpful remark in the contect of this thread.

Paypal DO NOT think you are a crook or a money launderer, they are simply complying with government & federal legislation to control money laundering - try paying £5000 cash into a high street bank for the first time, and you will have to jump through the same hoops.

Please try to separate fact from opinion when the OP is need of the former. This is exactly where Paypalsucks causes more trouble than it claims to solve.

The sums actually 15000 Euro I beleive according to the UK anti-money laundering legislation.

However, Paypals actually shot themselves in the foot over this whole issue

thought this might help - same thing happened to me, so i rang them everyday did as they suggested, wrote the emails as stated in that thread and about month later got my acc sorted, unfrozen, and able to withdraw.

all i can think of is that i had sold more items, of higher value than usual - both mine and my partners mobile phones.

this seemed to flag acc up. very odd and paypal make me feel v v wary - i'm cautious now.

    GOOD LUCK!!

There is no set figure in money laundering regulations also paying £5000 in one go is differerent to paying £10 a week for 10 years, no money launderer in their right mind is going to try an put a few pence a week through Paypal.

Paypal have a UK office in Richmond and you can serve Small Claims court summons on them there.
That’s their ‘registered offices’, but there’s never been any evidence of a physical office being there. BBC Watchdog went to the old Hotham House address – I think it was presenter Paul Heiney. There’s a building at that address alright, but there was no evidence of PayPal being there. All of the customer service and customer-facing legal team for PayPal and eBay seem to be based in Ireland. The old Richmond PO Box address may still be good, as they’ve only moved around the corner.
    PayPal (Europe) Ltd
    Whittaker House
    2 Whittaker Avenue
    RICHMOND
    TW9 1EH

However, even if you post to the above address, I would still expect it to get forwarded to Ireland, adding more delay. The one and only time I posted to the old Richmond address, the reply, eventually, came back posted from Ireland. I’ve got a much quicker response by sending directly to the address in Ireland.

It should probably also be remembered that, since PayPal (Europe) Ltd transferred all accounts to PayPal S.à r.l. et Cie, S.C.A., you no longer have a direct relationship with PayPal (Europe) Ltd. The Luxembourg Bankers’ Association member page for PayPal (Europe) S.à r.l. et Cie, S.C.A. makes interesting reading. They’re a limited liability partnership owned almost entirely by PayPal 2 S.à r.l. And who are they, in turn, owned by?

Not true at all, never had a High Street bank treat me this way, I would also add that any problems with High street banks are sorted out very quickly "In branch" and with a human being to speak to.

You want to get your facts right Stevew before you go around making assumptions and conclusions without having all the facts. It took me more than 4 years to pass the magic £5000 barrier with Paypal - some money launderer that makes me! And what kind of bank or financial institution then locks up YOUR money and will not let you access it until you provide all kinds of personal data. Your are not warned about this, it just suddenly happens. There are some very serious issues and problems with the way Paypal goes about its business but then you will never understand this until you have suffered first hand - and you so obviously have not unlike others on here.

i had a simialr situation with paypal, £180 frozen because someone with similar details to me (due to the data protection act they wont tell me what matches) has an account with issues so when i signed up to paypal they froze it, did the same as the OP, proof of posting, passport photocopy, utility bills etc, many emails later they wanted reciepts, told them it was all second hand gifts etc which nearly everything was, they said fine, got another mail to say that due to somoeone having similar account details with mine then they cant release my account, although they want me to solve the problem they cannot mention anything about the other account so i'm kinda stuffed, i keep getting mails saying it must be someone in my house, other than my 5yr old daughter its my missus and me but they will not accept that fact, coupled with the fact that a few months back my credit card/bank cards went missing and it could well be that somone set up a account to scam people and i cant do anythign about it, paypal said they want to see a crime report from the police as they obviously do not believe its happened, although i only phoned my credit card company and they sorted it all out so i didnt even worry with the police so without a crime number i cant prove what i'm saying, however i did manage to get my money back another way and that included the £14.00 for paypal reversing the bank transfer whcih started the whole problem in the first place

good luck op they are really frustrating to deal with and I no longer accept paypal and ive had a spreadsheet running and its affected about 4 sales in 80 so far so i'm happy with not using them though i do understand why buyers like them, there are so many scams involving paypal that i was glad to get rid of them.

You are quite right, I haven't experienced any problems with paypal, but that may just be becasue I understand how they work, and as much as can cause me pain, I do follow their T&C's in order to use their services. If you have a paypal account then you have agreed to abide by their T&C's.

Any guesses what happens when you do not follow their conditions?

You dont post to that address. You serve a small claims court summons on them. And they pay up. It would cost them £500 minimum just to represent themselves and deny liability.
