Guidance for best buys for savers is all very well but I have found it is not that easy. Currently recommended ICICI but when I try to invest I can't because I have a current bank account without a cheque book. Same problem at Bradford & Bingley. Tried to invest online with Newcastle BS but can't because I use a Mac!! Perhaps Martin should point out these problems when making recommendations.

You're in a sizeable minority .... on both counts. If the Email etc extracted all the small print that might affect everyone, none of us would get anywhere.
Regret you have to do some of your own research! If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Regarding your first problem, it is not hard at all to run a secondary current account with a cheque book. I can't personally understand why anyone chooses not to have a cheque book - there are situations where a cheque is the only way to pay. And as you've noticed ICICI use it as a means of proving ID.
Using a Mac isn't per se a reason not to use a particular savings account - almost all libraries offer free internet access; there are many other ways to access the internet. Obviously if you are going to move money in and out all the time, it'll be a pain - but it's not a total exclusion of a particular account IMHO.0 -
Not being that well up on computers, can someone please explain why using a Mac stops you using on-line banking?
I am puzzled since my daughter uses a Mac and has no problems accessing her accounts with Halifax and Icesave.0 -
When I opened my B&B account I was given the option to open the account with a bank transfer, I didn't send a cheque and the account works fine.0

Most accounts work with the Macs standard browser Safari, but if you have problems, try using Firefox only very rarely will a site not work on the Mac with that too. And if they don't, complain to the bank. I don't have any problem with my on-line accounts, and I connect using both PCs and Macs (nearly always using Firefox on both though).0
