a regular offer in my experience especially when flying 'small' aircraft between US cities.
on the last occasion they were offering $300 per person as the plane would have been overloaded ( i think because of a lot of luggage going on ) so all the seats weren't full.
a sobering thought was if they didn't get enough volunteers they would bump off the last people to check-in.....a problem if you haven't got time and interlined flights
Two different scenarios
In the first the plane was over-sold (for whatever reasons) and there is a clearly laid out program of compensation -Technical delays are treated entirely differently as the airline haven't requested you not to travel as per your tickets (or required you to which is the other alternative if they don't get enough volunteers) but it becomes something unavoidable. Hence two entirely different ways of compensating.
Bumps can be wonderfully MSE-we paid £260 for a London New York return-got offered and accepted $400 in AA vouchers for future flights to travel on the next flight 2 hours later coming home (and refused $500 and a hotel & meals to fly out a day later travelling out from London.) Basically it meant that by adding in some miles our next trip to Vegas didn't cost a penny for the two of us for flights-and if we'd accepted the outward bump too-the same again for the trip after.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

As a flyertalker and an AA frequent flyer-I agree a voucher is MUCH more likely than cash.May be a bit after the fact now, but if you ask on Flyertalk you may get some knowledgeable answer.
I think you could have insisted on being rerouted as mentioned by duchy.
If you get any compensation (doubtful) it could be a 'flight voucher' to use on subsequent AA flights.
Good luck.
If you use the search on flyertalk you'll find plenty of posts about similar situations (and the regular posters on the AA board DO like to point out to newbies that you should have searched before posting !!!)I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
