lying on a CV/Interview

ok so im looking for a lil part time job some thing like 16hours just to fill in the spare time i got, i know i can do the job, but they ask if i have experience in "Handling of incoming calls" sadly i dont have this huge experience in the commercial sector (yes there is a bit of sarcasm there) so i replyed in a confused tone "no" and the interview ended there and then :(

so i was thinking i would put in my work history some type of call centre job and have a friend ready to ref it,. or say the company stopped trading etc etc,. surly if i can do the job it wouldnt matter if i lied too get it ?

on another note i went into a college with a friend, who went too enrol, he gave his from to a lady in her mid 40's to process his enrolment form but she was very puzzled on how to Edit his details as he attended the collage before, the small task of entering 5 lines of data onto the Collage Data base took a very looong 45minzs ,. when at other processing points it was taking 5minzs or less,. she even asked for help 3 times and was very frustrated,.

and another time a young lady in her early 20's in my local bank did the same fault,

my point is how do these ppl get the job there in/ keep the job there in,. surly they must of lied,

just want to know what other ppls views are on this ,..is every one lying on there CV and too what point ?

Just be aware that if you lie on a CV or an application form and you are later found out then that would constitute grounds for dismissal.....

i can understand that but that would be more like lying about a person's Educational Background,

No way, this is still deceit. The examples you give of people within their jobs, could simply be a data/computer error rather than proof that they can not do their jobs or have indeed lied.

i wont get into detail on what i asked but it was a question about buying off a loan,. the lady at the bank give me the wrong information while typing away on her computer, and for some reason she made out that she was reading it from the computer display,. i went home and called the online banking dept. (which is in India by the way) they told me the another piece of info. which turned out to be right,.. so if i listend too the lady in the bank i would of been 60£ out of pocket,

as for the lady at the collage there was nothing wrong with the system as we were both looking at the display i even pointed at the "Edit" button on the database layout i guess that !!!!!! her off,.

anyways seems like im having a moan :T ,i guess its one of them cases "its not what u know its who u know"

I'm not surprised you didn't get the job if you looked confused when they asked if you had experience of handling incoming calls! You've got to at least appear like you understand the question!

For future reference, if you're ever asked the same question at interview, you only need to reply something along the lines of 'in my previous posts I haven't had much opportunity to handle incoming calls from clients, but I would welcome the opportunity to learn how to handle incoming calls correctly and to gain experience in this, as I feel being able to communicate well with clients is a vital skill to have'

See, in just one sentence you will appear honest - admitting you've little experience in that type of thing; and you appear interested and insightful (knowing that it is a vital skill to have). You can apply this to just about any question regarding experience - employers are always looking for someone who is willing to learn new skills.

As for the lady at the College, chances are she wasn't very computer literate - lots of people struggle to really get to grips with computer skills - it doesn't mean that she's not really good at her job though.

Lying at interview/on a CV rarely works anyway - if you lie on your CV chances are you will have forgotten about it by the time you get interviewed, and then when they ask you about it you'll look like a right plank!

Remember that personality also plays a large part in whether you get the job - if you are obnoxious and arrogant, you won't get the job even if you're the most highly qualified person on the planet. Conversely, if you're polite and friendly and willing to admit that there are gaps in your knowledge which you are anxious to fill, you might just find they're prepared to give you a go.

honestly kate i think theres was nothing i could say, after my confused tone "no" i told the lady about my 18months face 2 face customer service skills learn with a well know Hotel firm,. but its wasnt enuff, even that wonderful reply u put together would of got shotgunned with a sharp replying "Sorry but thats what we want are employees to meet"
  • Another thing to note is that lying on a CV/Giving false references can lead to criminal proceedings against you, as it can be seen as gaining pecuniary advantage by deception. In other words, it's fraud. The employer can get the police involved, as they have paid wages to that person based on the information given on a CV/references. If that information turns out to be false, that's fraud and the police can be called in.

I think when you apply for a job it is so important to read the job specification carefully. Some skills will be "essential" and some will be "desirable". What mention of telephone skills was made in the advertisement? Although I would expect most people without the necessary skills to be weeded out prior to the interview stage.
If the essential criteria were not made clear then I think you have reason to be miffed.

I'm not too sure about making up a whole new fake job on your CV as it could be biting off more than you can chew, but if someone asks you next time whether you handled incoming calls in a previous job, just reply, "Oh yes, all the time."

Maybe add in how it was one of your favourite parts of the role for good measure :D

As for how some people manage to get particular jobs, sometimes it's one of those mysteries of the universe that no one can answer!

I think we all slightly bend the truth in these situations, but please don't purposelly lie to people. Think how pi**ed off you be if you'd taken on someone who couldn't do what they said they could.
