Totally agree with this comment, it is inevitable that banks are going to start looking else where to fill the £40 billion hole that overdraft charges would leave. HSBC are clearly testing the water here but kick up enough of a fuss and they will back down
£40billion?! Where on earth has that figure come from?
Surely it is not 'that' high?

I have contributed zero pounds to that. I am very proud. :money:

I don't think I have received a letter like this for my HSBC account, which is usually in credit by a small amount (I always take the account to zero at the end of the month; if it doesn't reach 0 or less) never had any penalty charges, but I have a £1500 authorised overdraft, so I'd have to seriously screw up to reach that.

I don't always read all the letters as there are so many junk ones offering loans (I think halifax are worst, always giving me extra junk mail), if it is a loan advert it goes into the shredder...

If they did try this I would probably close the account on principle as I have been thinking about opening an account with a bank with lower foreign withdrawal charges anyway.
