Many of the Canon cameras either have a remote (some of the Powershot models), or you can purchase them afterwards as an extra (e.g. most of the EOS range).

All of the Olympus E-series cameras can be operated by IR remote, though I think the remote itself is an optional extra.

Remote control software, as that offered by the current EOS 40D (not 400D) is very different to a similar IR remote shutter release which is what the OP wants - which is available on most compacts or consumer DSLRs as an option, if the control doesn't come in the box (like it used to with all the original Powershot G series)

Most good photographers use long optics with a wide constant aperture for these sports shots mentioned above, either Canon L series (I use these) with IS (image stabilisation) or the equivalent Nikon lenses, and the majority of Pros don't use remote control from stills. However, if they are wired up to a remote control system, this can allows full control of focusing, aperture, ISO etc, on the more expensive models. Never met a pro stills photographer that uses such a technique for anything other than time lapse though...
