hi,recently my wife started work in our local co-opbut is already fed up there.reason being that they have now been told that they are not to offer cash back to card payers and if asked by customer they are to tell them they do not do cash back.as you can imaging some customers get upset at this and start arguing.my question is----are the co-op allowed to do this? and if so shouldn,t they have signs up saying so?

blimey..It might actually be a decision made by the co-op manager of that branch. I have two close to me and both still offer cashback. As far as I know its at the discretion of the individual shop. At least plenty of shops out there do not offer the service and we are trained to recognise which will and wont accept.
At least I wouldnt dream of asking a clothing retailer or McDonalds for cashback, but I would ask at a petrol garage or supermarket.
If I was your wife, I would stay working as it will only be difficult for a short period while people are getting used to not reliying on Co op for cash back and in the meantime just refer any angry customers straight to the management!0 -
I think what you have to remember is that Cashback is a privilege not a 'right'. Some shops offered it as an additional service to their customers but I am guessing the Co-op has found it either to be uneconomical or they have been 'burnt' by thieves etc.
It is the customers that are in the wrong to argue the point, not the Co-op. It might be useful to have a notice beside the till saying 'no cashback' however maybe the management thought that the 'personal approach' would be better. Its just one of those things were everybody thinks that they know their rights only to be made a fool of.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0
