ASUS eeePC and HTC Tytn as a modem

Hi,

I have bought an Asus eeepc and am very happy with it.

I also have a HTC Tytn and now a new t-mobile Vario 3 (or Tytn 2)

I want to link the eeepc to my phone TYTN 2 (on t-mobile web n walk) to use as a USB modem and use my old tytn one for my wife to use when she borrows it (using a t-mobile payg £1 a day data tariff)

I have browsed the internet looking how to do this but everything I have found refers to windows XP or vista not xandross.

Any linux experts out there able to help me. I have a moderate technical know how but go easy on me if you have to talk about installing drivers and messing about with linux as I have used the eeepc for about a week!!

Does it have to be via USB? Why not use the eeePC wifi to connect to the TyTN2?
That way you should avoid the stickiness of getting the USB connection configured under Linux.

Google for "Chainfire" and "WMWiFiRouter" and all should become clear.

    Hi,

I work a lot on the road and already have a tytn2 with web and walk and use it with my current laptop to get the internet.

Just seen the EEEPC things and really like the idea of them

Did this wifi connection thing work for you?

    Thanks

Some types of T-Mobile Web'n'Walk 3g usb dongle can be used on Linux by loading Vodafone's driver for the same brand of modem onto it. Also I heard you can now get a program for a Nokia 3g + wifi phone that turns it into a mini wifi hotspot via it's 3g connection.

    Hi

I have just tried wmwifirouter on my HTC TyTnII with my new eeePC 701 4G, and it works fine even with WEP encrypting.

The easiest method is actually bouetooth, I have the Nano Bluetooth adapter (bought on Ebay, from this seller: item 160241012198) on my EeePC 900 and I use it to connect to a number of phones.

All it takes is a simple pairing procedure and the phone is ready to use as a modem. I've used Nokia, Sonyericsson and HTC models without a problem.

  • Hi there.

Why not try using your handset as a wireless access point!

I got WMWiFiRouter working by ensuring my EeePC was set to "ad-hoc" on the network card Hope this helps - it's great when it works.

Also, see my post about cutting down on data roaming costs too: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=811769 It is actually possible to use Opera Mini browser on your EEEPC as your browser via MicroEmulator (Google these two with EeePC) so if you are only in 2G mobile areas, it greatly speeds up browsing times as the Opera servers greatly reduce the size of the data you need to download before downloading to your computer.

    Good luck.
  • Very informative thread.

I got an Acer AspireOne and HTC Touch will try these settings discussed here.
