Mouse Light Stays On - Standby Power?

Hi all, first post of mine in the techie forum!

I like to think I'm normally fairly savvy, but this is driving me up the wall.

I used to have a Microsoft Optical Intellimouse. USB connection, but with a PS2 adapter so used to plug it in the PS2 port.

When I shut my computer down, the red light of the mouse would remain on, at least until I unplugged the mouse cable and plugged it back in again. Fair enough, I thought, minor weird issue but I can cope with unplugging and replugging my mouse each time I shut down (my computer's usually on long enough that it's seldom an issue, heh!)

Except that I've recently replaced my mouse with a nice shiny new (optical) one (non-Microsoft), similarly with a USB connection but through a PS2 adapter.

And now unplugging the damn thing and plugging it back in again doesn't shut the light off. As soon as it's plugged in, it lights up, whether the machine's up or down!

I dislike leaving my mouse unplugged when the computer's off (because being the absent-minded fool I am I have a tendency to boot the machine and then wonder why the cursor's not moving!) and I don't really want a garish blue light shining at me when I'm trying to sleep.

Initial research has indicated that this could be due to a 'standby power to PS2' jumper on my motherboard, but close examination of the motherboard reveals no such jumper that I can see!

Anybody able to shed some light (*groan*) on the issue? At all? Please?

What does it do if you leave it connected to USB rather than PS/2. PS/2 adapter is only really there if you have no USB ports at all. I.e. it's a legacy connection.

Have you checked in the BIOS to see whether there is an option for this (probably under Power Management)? Most functions that used to be controlled by jumpers on the board are now implemented in the BIOS.

You may not be able to do this as you need to change a jumper on the mainboard to disable "Power on keyboard" and there's no guarantee this jumper is present. This jumper provides power to the PS/2 port so that you can use the "Wake on Keypress" option in the Power Management section of the BIOS.

Basically, if there's no jumper there there's nothing you can do. It won't shorten the life of the mouse - I've had one that's been like that for 3 years.

the power switch on your PC -( is it a PC not a laptop ? )- just turns off certain things inside your computer - not everything - hence you can have set in the BIOS "wake on LAN" wake on keyboard etc which need power. To completely turn your PC off - turn it off from the wall but only after the PC has turned itself off.

Also plugging/unplugging directly into a ps2 port can weaken and eventally break it....

Yup, I've checked the BIOS (with a fine-toothed comb) and unfortunately there's no option to disable, enable or otherable it.

I'll try it with just the USB connection and see if it changes things - for some reason I had it in my head that a straight USB connection was slower/less reliable than via PS2...no idea where that idea came from!

Sadly there definitely appears to be no jumper on the keyboard, so if the straight USB doesn't solve it I'll have to go back to my other incredibly technical solution: putting a dark flannel over it before I go to sleep!

    Thanks all!

Turn the PC off from the wall socket or use a switched power extension lead that will turn off all the power to the PC and you can sleep well and not worry about your flannel catching light from the heat of the led ..... :rotfl:

There's so many standby lights and transformers that heat up etc I always switch off at the mains at night.
