Thinking Australia for a month - What's best ??

Hi guys.
As it's a special birthday for my wife this year and she has always wanted to go to Australia, I thought I'd look in to it.
Anyone got any good tips for who to speak to about 4 weeks, going to 3 or 4 different areas of Oz (we want to look with a possible mind to moving out there).
Most likely hotel based (although I wouldn't mind some driving/Camper-van, my wife hates them so I don't think I could persuade her)
No problem buying separately (flights/hotels/whatever else)
Probably for 3 of us (2 plus a 4-year old) - Possibly 18-year old too, but I doubt it.
No idea when, but just looking for tips for now.
Thanks
Craig

I have just come back from a month over Christmas. Have been several times before but this time we rented a house in Perth for a week, spent a week in Adelaide (visiting friends) and visited the Barossa Wine Valley then spent a week in Canberra again with friends before drving to Sydney and spending a couple of days there. Perth was fantastic, we rented a house in Sorrento which was almost on the beach. Adelaide is also good. There is quite a lot to see in Canberra but a lot of people would tell you not to bother. We have also spent time up the eastern coast - Sydney, Brisbane, Noosa. All of these are great places but it really depends on what you are looking for. Our son is 8 now and loved the theme parks up near Brisbane/Cairns. Wherever you go you will have a great time.0

Sydney is wonderful - be sure to get the ferry over to the north shore - or even stay in Manly and enjoy the view of the CBD (central business district)across the Paramatta (Sydney Harbour). There are a few smaller stops along the north coast rather than stay in Brisbane (another nice city but) like Mooloolaba or Noosa (Noosa is the Monte Carlo of Oz so very expensive). Melbourne is nice, but cooler and wetter though the lcoals say if you don't like the weather wait a minute - its true they often have four seasons in one day!
Canberra is lovely to walk around and usually quite quiet as its a purpose built city so everyone there works 9-5 or is at school. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back, but I wouldn't be unhappy to go there again.
Adelaide is nice but not as much there as Sydney or the north east coast.
I didn't visit Perth but my brother lives in Leeming near Freemantle and adores it. Do get out to the vineyards if you can and the Blue Mountains are worth a trip if you go to Sydney. Same for Cape Tribulation if you go to Cairns/Great Barrier Reef.
I wouldn't recommend flying with Thai Airways, though I've heard Emirates are very luxurious! Internal flights aren't bad value and are the best way f you're short of time.
