    Just to confirm - she does need to register - the point of the allowances is that they allow for the costs involved in ensuring that the home / person meets the criteria for registration. A close relative wouldn't have to meet these criteria and so can't be given the allowances.

    my mum looked after my two couple years back but wasn't on benefits. I always gave her a wage but could never put this to the wftc as mum wasn't registered.

    If your mum was registered properly, then she could look after other kids as well (if she wanted to!), earning herself more money. As well as your little one, she could possibly take on two other pre-schoolers, as well as doing before or after school care as well. This can bring in quite good money, although it can be hard work and childminding can be quite an isolating thing to do.
