Washing machines

I find it so annoying having to wait two minutes to open the door, I wonder why they do that, I imagine it's some safety thing.

It is indeed a safety thing. Its called an interlock an its done to be sure that the drum has stopped rotating before you can open the door.

If it didnt have one imagine all the small children up and down the country merrily opening the doors as the machine rotates full of water.

Result = lots of not so happy parents

In the olden days, (well, late 70's!) my Mam put my brothers beloved Doggy in the washing machine. My brother saw Doggy going round and round, and opened the door to get him back. He flooded the kitchen and he could have burned himself if the washer had been on a hot cycle. A safety lock on the door would have prevented that.
Here I go again on my own....

About 14 years ago my hubby bought our first washer. It was a hotpoint washer drier. The door lock was manual ie: turn the lock yourself. I never bothered. My 2 children never tried to open the door during cycles either. It was heaven to be able to open the door just as the cycle had finished.

I am now on my 3rd washer (my servis one broke down twice in 3 years, the second time it could not be repaired) and it drives me mad I have to wait and then usually forget that I have washing to hang out.

I think the optional door lock is an excellent idea.

..........the worst event would be if someone could reach into the washing machine while the drum was still spinning. The safety catch prevents such accidents.

I appreciate the safety aspect, but is two minutes necessary, when it finishes it's cycles the drum has stopped spinning,so 30 seconds would be enough.

"A watched safety lock never unlocks". Make yourself a cup of tea during those two minutes, and they'll pass more quickly.

Don't stand watching the kettle though, or making the tea will take longer than the washing machine ...
