I own a few fur coats myself, also vintage, some of the gifted to me from older women, others I`ve bought. My ethics are, if you will eat the animal or use the leather for shoes etc, feel free to wear it`s skin too. If it`s vermin...as foxes are here...ditto. :)
I wear my fur coats in winter when it`s very cold as temperatures here plummet, sometimes to minus twenty. I haven`t found anything so warm as fur, but I also changed the nylon linings in my coats for cotton, as nylon defeats the purpose. :)
You can easily cut up the coats to make cushions or pillows, or if you got many of them piece them together for rugs or throws. Very luxurious.
I myself own an airgun and shoot rabbit round here, plus have rabbits given to me by the local ranger when he shoots them. I eat the meat and use the skins. Rabbit fur is quite fragile though and tears easily so must be backed for extra strength but it`s great for lining items like hoods or gloves. :) The freezer idea is a good one, or to clean old coats, gently heat bran or oatmeal in a low oven and rub it into the fur, leave for about an hour then shake vigorously outside, acts like a kind of dry shampoo.

Had already checked out EBay, but most of the real ones do not sell. Probably 90% of the ones for sale are faux fur.

I do because most of it is cat or dog fur from china where they are skinned alive...that your idea of fun is it? You should be ashamed of yourselves for saying that you don't have a problem with that!!

I'd take that with a pinch of salt. It would be a lot easier to skin a less wriggle animal, even in China.

China do have some very disturbing practices when it comes to fur farming, and I would urge anyone to avoid buying for from China. Having said that, there are other, better sources (albeit more expensive), such as North America where wild animals (not endangered species) are trapped and the furs used for garments, etc.

I am a fan of fur for practical reasons, but abhor the idea that it should be used purely for fashion statements.

ewww at wearing a real fur coat, the thought makes me feel sick. i've watched the PETA videos of animals being skinned alive for fur in china..the animals don't wriggle because the men throw the animals over their shoulders and bang their heads on the floor etc to kind of paralyse them for the moment...it made me cry. I sometimes wonder if the word compassion has ever been in the dictionary. There were even programs on tv about where fur comes from and how you don't always know if it's come from these horrible places or not...some real fur was even found being sold as faux fur in some places! it's mad! might have been panorama or something?! gosh I can get very wound up about this, don't even get me started on hunting for a pathetic 'sport' :X
  • ALJA at last someone speaks sense it's barbaric even thinking of buying fur. I see Peacocks selling real fur hand bags and they lied saying it was mislabelled yet it came from China and was labelled as 95% fur. Mink fur is being sold in lots of places too! Rabbits are vaginally or anally (depending on sex) electrocuted. Do you really care so little about animal welfare..

Have seen it on TV watch peta's videos if you think it;s not true if you watch Panorama or /tonight it has been on there the animals scream. How would you like to be skinned alive!!
  • Im against fur too but Im not a supported of peta who destroy all animals in their 'shelter' and doesnt rehome a single one

  • Hi,

I've watched the PETA videos and they are disturbing but what alternatives do people propose?

There's little point in protesting if people can't suggest alternatives that are greener and more ethical.

Is resuse now considered unethical or ungreen?
