Services problem

Might be a bit of a long one, sorry

PC's been on all day, been converting a few DVD's for the PSP and everything has been working fine. Only strange thing was I tried to update the definitions on AVG spyware and Ad-Aware and on both a got 'error retrieving update'. Didn't think anything of it as I'd been on the net all day.

Went to get something to eat, came back and opened firefox, got the 'page cannot be displayed'.

My internet had been off last week so I thought the same thing might have happened. Restarted the PC and modem and the PC wouldn't load windows. Hung on 'applying your personal settings'. Tried in safe mode, same thing happened.

Tried gaina and left it for a while, after about 15 mins it loaded. And everything worked fine besides there being no internet connection at all. Vaguely remembered having a problem like this a while back and it being one of the services, went to services in the control panel and the following were listed as 'starting'

DHCP client
System event notification
Webclient

Set them to disabled and restarted, windows loaded as normal, but obviously no internet. So it's clearly one of those slowing the load time down.

Once I'd restarted I tried to start them manually but each said they could not start (Error 1053 The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion).

I've uninstalled a few things today because I've been trying out various converters for the PSP, and I also uninstalled O&O defrag. Could I have caused changed that would stop the services working?

Anyone have any idea how I can get them working again?
