Loft Conversion on a tight budget

In the near future we are planning to have our loft converted into a bedroom but as we are on a tight budget we will be doing a lot of the work ourselves, getting qualified workmen in when necessary.
Has anyone else done their loft this way and how much are we looking at paying, my hubby is a plasterer and decorator so this will be done for the cost of materials, so we will have to pay out for the stairs, windows, and electrics.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance xx
