Trouble with my icons

Just got a new Sony laptop. When I put shortcuts on the desktop, it appears with a standard internet explorer icon. when I did this with my previous PC, it showed the icon associated with the site ie, this site showed Martins face. I tried changing the icons through windows, (it only allows the pre loaded windows icons) but it changes back each time I restart. I know it can be done, because PC World loaded some programmes ( Skype and ebay) and those icons are OK. Any tips?
