bank error, TSB have put parents accounts onto my online banking!

Logged in today and noticed my online banking had 2 accounts which i did not recognise.

After some digging the accounts were my parents, well one was my dads, and the other was a joint account (mum & dad). My dad and I share the same initials (thats all, different first name)

Also some of my details (such as work phone number) was now my dads work number.

TSB online banking was contacted and we have a contact name/number and they have suspended my online banking till its sorted.

However my concerns still are :

#1 could this have ANY potential future influence on credit checks?
#2 How could this happen, esp in the days of data protection where you need to give your foot size before you can login ;)
#3 Are there any other things to watch for in the future regarding the accounts?
#4 who can i write to regarding a complaint, want to write to the TSB but i feel a letter to the ombudsman as well (anyone know the best person/organisation to write to?)
#5 would this cause any problems with things like wages going in?

Luckily i get along with my parents, but this could have been a lot worse, what if i didnt get along and abused the account without telling them (IIRC transfers to a same bank account is instant)? or found that my parents have huge debts that they didnt want to tell anyone?

I will be booking a meeting with a local branch to go through my details with a fine toothcomb after its 'sorteed', but its worrying that they seem to have simply merged 2 different peoples details without even checking the first name. Just glad i have a screenshot of the information before i was blocked access!

but then again, in 15 years of banking its the 1st real problem i have had!

and sorry for lack of posting, i tend to lurk on here, rather than post :o

Most Banks group accounts under an internal ID or use the name + ID. Sounds as though something has happened to confuse the system and your Dad's name has been linked to your ID.

Shouldn't have any impact other than that you've noticed as the accounts remain discrete ... but grouped for view access. It may have allowed you to move money between them ... but doubt you'll now know?

Formal complaint to them first before you can take it further. But they should beat a path to your door first ... if they have any sense .... what's happened is embarrassing for them! If they dont .... you know they have no sense, so complain accordingly - and get Dad to join in.

Wow - that's some error. Banks make mistakes, of course, you expect that, but as you said - it could have been very serious.

Have no advice, I'm afraid, but had to register my surprise at such a big error!

I'm not sure the FOS would look at any complaint unless you've exhausted the bank's internal processes first...they provide compensation, but as you haven't lost anything I'm not sure what it would achieve. However, I'm only saying that from other posts I've read on here from people who know about the FOS, so I could be completely wrong...!

Hope you get it sorted soon. :)

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

In fact transfers between personal accounts are instant. My LTSB and OH's LTSB account are with entirely different branches, but transfers are instantaneous.

    nope, nothing.

This would be my first impression
There could have been an link in the past (at L TSB fault) and for some reason they have done some refreshing to bring all users accounts into the online view. By doing this it has show your fathers account as they think you two are one and the same.

How long have you had your account. (I would gues that at some point you had the account when you were at the same address as your farther or are still living at that address)

am still at home, but i would have thought at a minimum they would have checked the first name rather than initials.

i had an account review the other week and all was fine, but after applying for the CC this has happened.

waiting to see now what name my CC has on it!

These days when you open a new account the bank asks for all kinds of details about you, but this wasn't always the case. I occasionally come across old accounts where the only information about the customer is an initial and surname, no first name or date of birth. If your Dad has banked with them for ages, they might not have his full details and during a review assumed that the 2 records belong to the same person and merged them.
