elephants and turtles and fun things where where!

Hi there

I really need some advice on where to go on holiday to find great wildlife and an interesting culture. I want to see things like elephants and the baby turtles scrambling across beaches and to get a holiday outside Europe for a change. Any suggestions at all most welcome!

However, I'm not keen on going somewhere prone to tsunami or hurricanes and political unrest and the like!

also, some mse-style tips most welcome!

thanks and looking forward to your recommendations! hoping there is somewhere...

Amy

have a search for malawi! We just came back from there in October, and it has plenty of super cheap wildlife, some superb beaches and prices that mean you can do everything you want to and more.

I did a massive trip report on it, so if you use the search bar at the top, youll find my trip report.

you wont get turtles, in fact Im not sure where youd ever get turtles AND elephants, as they need different types of climates.

You get Turtles and Elephants in Sri Lanka and the best holiday ever with truly lovely genuine people who are really happy that you are visiting their country, gorgeous beaches, scenery and culture, however, if you are avoiding places prone to tsunami or political unrest then Sri Lanka is not for you.

Borneo has a orang utang sanctuary and theres a beach where you can watch the baby turtles hatching. Cant think of the name of the top of my head, something like Senegal Island i think.

however, if you are avoiding places prone to tsunami or political unrest then Sri Lanka is not for you.

Historically, Sri Lanka has had as many fatal tsunami's as Bristol in the last 500 years, so I wouldn't discount anywhere for tsunami reasons.

I'm guessing that Borneo is your best bet, as it's very safe. And sterile.

Personally Malawi's a great recommendation. As would be Rwanda, Madagascar, Indonesia, but they are not risk free (like London I guess!)

    So Borneo it is!

Im not sure what you mean about "risk free" - I did not feel at risk at any point on my trip to malawi, it certainly felt MUCH safer than anywhere else Ive ever been including Cuba which I thought uber safe.

the only worry I had was when coming within metres of a hippo in a canoe on in Liwonde National Park  :D

We stayed on Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef for four nights on our visit to Australia and watched the turtles laying the eggs. The place was truly amazing and I cant rate it high enough.

Wow, you guys are making me feel inspired, we're off to Italy this year and I will still really really enjoy it but you've got me thinking turtles now ...
    That's Numberwang!
  • We're off to Costa Rica in May / June and they do turtles on the beach. Not sure on price to get there as we had 2 free flights to Miami but only paid £400 return from Miami. I know Firstchoice do trips there now. Been looking at accommodation and they range from teh dirt cheap ($30pn) to the expensive ($100pn). Transport is very cheap.
