Ebay seller changing delivery fees

I bought a memory foam mattress from an ebay seller today. The advert clearly stated that it included free delivery. Later this afternoon he sent me a message through ebay stating that UPS would charge him a £15 surcharge because I live in the Highlands and that I should contact him to arrange payment for this surcharge.

Is he entitled to ask for this when it clearly states free UK delivery? and if he is would I be within my rights to refuse and get a refund?

    I assume he never excluded the Highlands from his listing? You can refuse to pay extra although you cannot force the seller to send the item. He will probably refund your payment if you do not pay the extra.

    No mention of surcharges for any areas other than Ireland, and the last time i checked i don't live in Ireland :D

    If you are happy for a refund, tell the seller that you will be paying the surcharge and ask for a refund. Did you pay by paypal?
  • is it still a good bargain even with the £15 on top... if you think so.. then pay it.... just to make things easy.

    He is right that the highlands costs more.. but he really should have checked up on that before he wrote the listing :rolleyes:
    I :heart::coffee:

    He most likely is paying a surcharge to send to you, but if he didn't mention it then he isn't entitled to charge it. However, he also doesn't have to send it to you, I've no idea, but that £15 may be wiping out his profit.
    It depends what you want, try and get the seller to pay the surcharge as he didn't mention it in the listing, that may work, always be polite. If he says no, and you still want it, try and get him to split the difference, pay half each, if that fails you can okay the £15 or you can pull out of the deal.
    If you pull out, the worst that can happen is he gives you negative feedback, but that's unlikely as you are more within your rights to leave him, so he won't want to risk that, plus he'll want to reclaim his fees, so won't want to upset you!

  • Just recieved another email through ebay from seller stating that his advert did show extra charges to the highlands but there isn't I just went over it again and can't find it anywhere.

    I'm going to pay the extra money anyway but it really get's me annoyed when companies charge extra for delivery to the Scottish Highlands as it's still part of the UK Mainland and no different to posting something to Lands End but they don't get screwed for more delivery charges.....

    Before you pay it, can you give us the link to the listing so I can check some details for you.
