Printing Lectures

Hi... sorry for the randomness and irrelevance of this thread.... but I need some help! We get given lecture slides before lectures at uni in either powerpoint or pdf format. I was just wondering if there's any way of printing them 6 slides to a page but increasing the size of the slides so there's no white spaces in between (so the slides are as large as possible).....

  • Im not sure... but id reccomend getting a cheap laser printer...I got one for £40 in the PCworld sale a while back... about 1p a sheet printing!

I already has an all in one but ink was costing a fortune!

Have you tried powerpoint handout mode? Or Acrobats print multiple function?

With PP have you tried the following:

File - Print preview - Print what (handouts) - Options - scale to fit paper

That seems to make it a bit bigger.

There is a clever way of doing this. If you use your printers settings not the programs settings to do the multi pages per sheet. Instructions vary from printer to printer. In the end you print the pages like normally and the printer scales them to fit. This normally results in no wasted space.

I use the printers at uni... although I might look into getting one sometime soon!

I have tried that but it only makes them marginally bigger.... still loads of white space!

Go and ask the techie people in your uni library. They are a wealth of info and will probably save you hours of faffing!

Can you tell I've learned this the hard way? :D
  • Im not sure about yours but my library charge 6p per sheet or 9p dble sided... a cheap laser printer will soon save a fortune... seriously £30 toner = 3000 pages! + paper are 0.5p a sheet.

Can pick up a second hand one on ebay fairly cheap.

I picked up a HP1018 from PC world last year on a deal at £40... shop around are there are deals!

Toner through my uni IT purchasing shop it £10 cheaper than online too... only £30

Good suggestion above about playing with the printer driver settings to do the multiple pages, it will depend what printer you have and how comprehensive the available settings are.

Be careful with cheap lasers, make sure you check out the replacement toner costs, how many pages they'll do and when components like the drum need replacing and how much that costs. I did a bunch of research on this a little while ago for a company and some of the cheap lasers were quite high on per page running costs.

JohnDep - on those figures I make it 1p per page + paper.

HP No. 56 black cartridges - think the newer HP inkjets use different ones now but this always used to be the 'standard' black are 2.7p per page.

If you get a printer which takes HP 339 (Black) cartridges (which you can get for around £12 on eBay). It works out at 1.5p per page (excluding paper obviously).

sort of worked it out, if I print it as a pdf, and in the pdf options choose x pages per sheet of paper, it makes them bigger!!!
