I recently bought a sewing machine from Lidl ..little cracker..I threw my old brother one out cos the pedal was broken....like a fool....I am trying to sew a shirt with stretchy material but it keeps getting dragged down and jammed....any ideas???Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. ~Confucius0

Have you changed the needle? Strictly speaking you use a new needle for every garment you make, just to be sure it's sharp. In the case of stretchy fabric you need a special ballpoint needle, to avoid the fabric getting dragged down like you describe. A blunt needle will also do this to any fabric, not just knits.
There are different weights of needle as well, with fine ones for fine fabrics etc. Most needles on sale in the UK fit most standard machines, but best check for a Lidl machine.Val.0 -

Also, make sure you hold the two thread ends out behind the foot when you start to sew, that can drag both thread and fabric down into the feed dogs. Try using a tiny zigzag stitch as well as the ballpoint or stretch needle. If it still happens you could try stitching with strips of tissue or loo roll under the fabric between it and the feed dogs to stabilise the seam.
Good luck! Mrs F x0 -

I Love the Boden fabrics! but have never seen any on sale over here. I don't know whether the summer fabrics are in the shops yet (they were not in my local John Lewis last week) but hopefully there will be something along those lines when they are. Otherwise the links I gave in a previous post in the States might be of use except if you're just starting out I don't suppose you want to start buying fabrics from overseas just yet. Hmm. Will keep an eye out for youI love fabric shopping :rotfl:
