DVD format not recognised

This is for a friend of mine who has problems with his computer not recognising dvd recordings.

What he is doing is taking digital video on his camcorder and then burning to dvd via his dvd player/recorder (stand alone connected to his tv not his pc). These recordings play back fine when he watches them via the tv set up, but when he puts the disc into his pc it doesn't recognise them.

Does anyone know what he needs to do to be able to watch the recordings on his pc

Many Thanks

Does his PC have a DVD-ROM drive ?
On which DVD format is he recording? DVD-R or DVD+R

Its likely the dvd media format he is recording on is not recognised by the PC DVD drive.

DVDInfo or DVD-Identifier might help identify the PC DVD drive.

er, yes thats what I'm saying. The format is not recognised.

HE is recording in 2 versions on his dvd recorder/player which is either "VR" or "Video" - neither format is recognised by his pc which yes does have a dvd drive

By media format I mean DVD-R or DVD+R.

If he cannot open the DVD on the PC even to read the folders, if not play the file, then its probably the wrong format i.e. DVD+R in a DVD-R drive.
