Hi Im not sure if its been mentioned before but I have just got a tesco internet phone. Basically it works with your broadband connection and so theres no line rental. You get a phone number with your local area code and calls are very cheap. They have different price packages either pay as you go, £2per month for evening and weekend calls and £5 per month for free calls any time. Ive had it since xmas and think its really good, I also got £5 free credit!
The website is http://direct.tesco.com/q/N.1999609$4294967133/Nr.99.aspx
im sure if you go through a cashback site you will get cashback aswell

The ipa 1000 was at £19.99 before new year now its £39.99. A complete con. The Siemens DP450 was £49.99 before new year now its £99.99.
Its only really worth even attempting to use this service if A) you have cable broadband (and even then quality is not great) or b) you just want another line to use infrequently in which case you would pay as you go.
Sorry to pee a little on your bonfire0 -
The £2 per month for inclusive evening and weekend calls is not too bad,
However Tesco along with Skype are the two dearest VoIP providers.
I'm sure you'll see a thread on here that's been going a couple of years about the various VoIP services.
They charge 2p/min for calls, yet you can get them at around 1p/min on many others and get them for less or inclusive if you are happy to top up.
If you have to pay £5 per month, then you are NOT getting free calls - you are paying £5 per month for the calls. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

In effect, that means in a Virgin Media cabled area now, not where VM services are delivered via a standard telephone line.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

On cable broadband, yes you can have broadband without phone, as cable broadband comes through a co-ax cable like their TV service (you don't have to have their TV service) unlike ADSL which requires a phone line.
I was VoIP only for almost 2.5 years, in that 2.5 year I paid in total for my phone calls (no line rental) £6. OK this was via £1 credit, then £5 credit and then topping up using my mobile with the completely free credit I was given for recommending people to the network I was on.
I only have a phone line now because cable said they'd install it free and give me free line rental and free calls package, so I use them for my free calls and inclusive calls and VoIP for the others. (Previously had a BT line as standard cable phone rates are a rip-off).
I use a Linksys PAP2 ATA so I don't need the PC on to make and receive calls and anyone using the phones connected to this wouldn't even know it wasn't a regular phone line. The PAP2 has two lines each with a REN of 5, currently I have VoIPStunt on one line and Sipgate on the other, I could use another of the Betamax VoIP services, however as VoIPStunt back then issued local numbers and the number I have is an excellent one, I've kept with that.
The Tesco evening and weekend package is OK at £2/month if you have no phone line, but if you have a BT line with ADSL then you can get evening and weekend calls package for £0.00. You just have to be careful with Tesco as their call charges are with Skype the highest for a VoIP service. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc...
