DVD recodings won't work in DVD player

I bought a bush DVD recorder / VHS recorder combi in January and started copying all my VHS tapes (about 400 recorded over 20 years) onto DVD.
nearly 6 months later I'm 90% finished but I've found a problem. 20% of the DVD's I've done won't play in a DVD player. They play alright in the recorder but in the player some say 'wrong format' (they're not), some have interference on screen and keep stopping and some don't show the menu properly.

As long as they will play in a recorder I'm happy, but if I buy another recorder will they play in that? Are recordable drives higher quality, stronger lasers or something? Anyone got any idea's?
Regards

Not all players can see the material on the disc - the same way old CD players may not like CDRs or RWs. With DVD-R you must also finalise the disc for it to be readable. What format have you used?. Newer DVD players have a multiread(?) logo or the like and tell you what they can play.

Recorder is +R. What I can't understand is that 80% of what I record will play on the player (cheap ALBA one). It doesn't make sense. The only obvious cause is that the DVD recorder is rubbish. But why does everything work in the recorder? Unless its the player thats rubbish?

Same brand and batch of discs? this can make a big difference. If not it could just be on the borderline so some work, and other don't

As lipidicman says, not all DVD players are the same. I have a really good quality Toshiba which has a great picture but wont go near anything except bona fide DVD's. On the other hand my cheap-as-chips £25 machine will play anything I throw at it.. I use the Tosh for lord of the rings extended versions and the cheapo for cartoons..

Its about the same with several different types. Datawrite, tuffdisc and 'the blue ones' (can't remember the make) from SVP and Mr DVD from Tesco's. All 4X DVD+R. I also bought some 8X disc's (only 25) but the recorder won't record on 8X.

I'd hate to buy a decent DVD recorder then find it won't play the 450 DVD's I now have on my shelves. I better buy an up to date cheap one and try that.
