Recycling CDs and VHS Tapes

Any idea of what to do with these? The CDs are the computer software ones from people like AOL. The VHS tapes are no longer required as we do not have a tape player any more.

I did a search on the net and can see that the one company The Recycling People charge to break these down to then send for recycling.

Thanks in advance.

Floxxie.

  • If you know any gardeners they might be able to use the cd's...

You can hang the CD's from thread and as they swing and rotate in the wind the sun will catch the shiny side and scare off birds. Dunno where I heard about this but it really does work.

Perhaps you have some allotments near you? People there may be able to use them... Hope this helps

I am not aware of any use for VHS tapes, other than to give them to a charity shop if they still work ok?

However, I received a note today from my daughters school asking for CD's. Apparently Blue Peter are running an appeal for them to raise money for Barnardo's - and my daughters school has a collection box.

Either tune into Blue Peter for more info, see if a local school is doing the same - or if you wish to post them to me, I will happily pass them onto my daughters' schools appeal.

Please pm me for my address if you wish to send them on.

Thankyou - I have allotments around the corner from me and yes, I have seen them in action!

Thanks for this, I have been onto the BBC site and copied this snippet off there:

The Disc Drive is this year's Blue Peter appeal. We want you to donate unwanted CDs, DVDs and computer games discs so Barnardo's can raise money and support young carers across the UK.

Take your discs to your nearest Donation Station – any Barnardo’s shop, Lloyds TSB bank or local BBC Radio Station.

This sounds a perfect solution to unwanted CDs!

    Many thanks to you both.

Apart from magpies that is, they like shiny stuff dont they? ;)
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)
  • Oooh - I never thought of that!!! My hubby is about to create a veggie plot in the garden and I thought I was being very clever with this one, having saved up all the old CD's but I hadn't thought of the magpie thing...

    Do magpies eat veggie shoots?

Are there any charities that take these? The blank ones I mean.

It seems a shame to throw them away if they could make money from them.

    Also floppy disks.
  • Sorry I don't know of anywhere that takes them, why not try putting them on Freecycle, our local group has quite a few charities that use it.

Failing that the VHS tape can be knit into shopping bags. I've made a couple and they are surprisingly hard wearing.

Sorry I can't think of a use for floppy disks.
I won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead

One of my local 'independent' charity shops takes old VHS tapes, I think they sell them for 20p-ish each - it might be worth asking around your local shops. I've never seen anywhere that takes floppy discs though.
  • Petunia, post them to me, I'm still using a VHS video recorder and forever running out of space to record programmes!
