I like chickens... Eating them, that is... and I don't give a cheep how they get on my plate.

But surely if you like eating them you care what they taste like and better reared chickens taste much better too! :D

Sorry, I was implying that you sounded like a caricature created by one of the wind-up brigade, but it appears that you are real! Apologies for my lack of perspicacity.
  • Sod the chickens. Having wrung a few necks in my time, shot lots of rabbits and shot a cow, I really don't care. Probably the stupidest animals on the planet. They just happen to be tasty. Who cares how horrible their miserable lives are.

None of my family can actually tell the difference between a 2 for £5 (well £5.50 now) chicken from Tescos and a £9 organic one from Waitrose. I don't think anyone can. It's the psychological effect of paying nearly 4x the amount for the same chunk of dead bird that makes it taste better.

I get the feeling that because Jamie Oliver says so then the sheep-like proletarians follow blindly. Remember, this is coming from the guy who drizzles everything to death with Olive Oil (a dangerous source of Omega 9 fatty acids which cause arterial and vascular restriction as well as an effective laxative). Your funeral.

In summary, there is no way are any of these people are qualified to tell you how to run your life. It's no better than the 1920's cigarettes adverts telling you that they cure lots of problems. It's not the whole picture.
£8k to pay off before Jan 2011! Was 28k to pay off by Jan 2010 though so I'm happy :)

    It's not the whole picture.

What is the whole picture then? (Behind all the emotive language & macho talk, that is.) 'These people' did not tell us how to 'run our lives,' but they did explain clearly how our choice of meat impacts on the farming industry and, ultimately, animal welfare. Before their programmes many people were not aware how chickens are produced.

So, are you saying that there is some evidence missing? Or are you just saying that animal welfare should be of no concern to the 'proletariat?' It is obviously of little concern to you, but that's not a reason to deny others' right to judge its importance for themselves.

Having killed quite a few chickens in my time, I try not to confuse my ability to end life with a lack of respect for it. Chickens may be a bit simple, but they're not so lacking in intelligence that we can ignore their basic needs because it suits us. To behave like that diminishes us as human beings. Or are you implying that we are all no more than animals? Ah yes, of course... 'sheep-like'
  • I thought this was going to be about slappers

Too late for the poll, but firmly in the C camp. I find the results of this poll relatively encouraging.

That said, whilst concerned about the welfare of chickens, I am rather more interested in the treatment of people, and in this case women. How come it passes without comment when someone refers to young women as "slappers" - a derogatory sexist term based on judgements about their sexual behaviour, which are in turn based on further judgements about the way they look or dress. I see that racist posts are discouraged, but apparently sexist ones are just fine...

Well, the title is "Cheap Chicks" - we would have had a similar comment if it was "Cheap Geezers" (in a mis-spelt reference to a fad for cut-price waterspurts).

The poster was just making an innocent joke: I wouldn't read too much into it :)

If you only buy free range eggs, watch out for the sneaky packaging. I bought some eggs at the weekend, that had Farm Shop eggs on the front and they were from a local farm, so I bought them. When I opened them last night, it had Caged in small letters inside. I cooked one free range and one caged, and the colour of the yolk was completely different! The caged one was bright yellow and the free range was a pale golden colour. I gave my OH the free range one, I'm nice like that. :D
