Where in Crete

Hi All
Looking for a bit of advice. We are wondering about trying Crete this year for a week in June, as we haven't been there before however we have no idea of which resorts to look at.
We are both in are mid 30's & like to spend a few days by the pool relaxing but have plenty to see & do around,so we could have a walk somewhere in the morning say before sunbathing. We like to self cater so somewhere with a good choice of taverns & restrauants, we are not into clubbing so as long as there are plenty of traverns with a good atmosphere to choose from we are happy. We love Pefkos in Rhodes & enjoyed a week in Skala in Kefelonia last year. So any suggestions guys on the resorts i should be looking at?
Many Thanks
Fee

We enjoyed rethymnonn. Stayed in the old town, near the harbour and lovely. loads of places to eat round there and near to the beach too. There's a castle to visit, a market and a few other bits and pieces. A walk to the more modern part of town is easy and nightlife is there if you go and look for it...it certainly isn't spilling out onto the streets of the old town.
In the area is samaria gorge...beautiful but exhausting 12 mile walk down a gorge. knossos is an easy bus ride away too. There are a few other attractions nearby, but we were having a quiet holiday so only did a few tourist bits and wandered the old shops lots.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

My friend went to Rethymnon last year and is going back this year, she absolutely raves about the place.
She stayed in a hotel called Porto Rethymnon in Rethymnon, she said it was expensive but well worth it, she stayed half board and said the food was fantastic as was the hotel, staff treated you like VIP's.
She did say it was quite quiet though from what I remember so might not be enough for you to do depending on how active you like to be on hols!Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -

Chania- designed by the Venicians at the West end if the Island is brilliant.Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

We stayed in Stalis which isn't fabulous but the hotel Anastasia was lovely. Stalis is handy for buses to Hersonnisis, Heraklion and Agios Nicolaius for days out. It's the opposite side of the island to Chania, some flights go into Heraklion so it depends where you can get to from your local airport.0

The Blue Sea Hotel in Stalis, Crete is an absolutely beautiful place to stay. Pool right by the beach, beach right across the road, 5minute stroll and you're right on the main street but not close enough for it to keep you awake at night. Right outside the hotel at the top is a bus stop which takes you to the major towns.
I've been there twice, can't recommend it highly enough.
