If it's really worn save it for dust sheets when decorating but if it has some good areas left you could make:-

aprons to give away as presents
sausage shaped bags for storing plastic carrier bags - could give these as pressies too.
a draught excluder, stuffed with old tights.
more pillowcases - they don't HAVE to match the duvet cover.
dolls clothes if you have children to give them to
    an ironing board cover

i made a single duvet into a cot duvet cover for my son when he was little. it also then got used as a play mat for the floor as we had lamiate so made it softer for him.

My sister used to keep her wedding dress in an old duvet cover.

I discovered this when we were staying with her once. DD was sick in the middle of the night on the duvet . I noticed another "duvet" in the spare room so fetched it to cover her but it made a strange rustling sound when I shook it out.On opening it I found the wedding dress-at least I didn't put it over DD-she was sick again a couple of minutes later!

    great thread!

I have an old duvet cover that has really served us well but is very tatty now. and now i have a tumble drier i can get away without using it. but i'm very attached sentimentally to the duvet cover (is that crazy? yup, it sounds crazy to me) so it's nice to think it can be re-incarnated as something else.
    weaving through the chaos...
  • Someone gave us a Bob the Builder quilt cover. I'm going to take another old single quilt cover and fill it with bean bag beans then stitch it up. I'll cover it with the Bob the Builder quilt cover and leave it buttoned so I can wash it. Then I'll have a nice long bean bag that both my boys can lounge on.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • Make a great, draftproof, sleeping bag for hot weather camping.

Ordinary sleeping bags are usually too hot for summer camping particulary if you are with your loved one and are zipped together in a bag!

I have opened up the whole length of an old king sized duvet cover and we use this as an alternative. Sew under the poppers for comfort's sake. Fewer drafts than with a sheet covering you. As I am usually the colder one I can cover my side with a fleecy blanket.

Much more room than in a double sleeping bag. Washing and drying is easy. Duvet covers make cheap sleeping bag liners for winter use as well.

Not long now and it will be camping weather!!

OMG! I was going to throw my old one out, i didn't think of using it for my foster dogs d'oh! :o
  • If you don't want your old duvet cover then think of homeless shelters or if not that way inclined, Horse sanctuary or local vet.

Vets (PDSA) often need them for bedding or they could help keep a weak horse comfortable in winter nights.

    Much more worthwhile IMHO.
