Broken office chair

I have an office chair that I use for my computer. The reclining mechanism has felt a bit funny for a while so I took the base off the chair and found that the steel mounting plate has sheared around the reclining mechanism.

I found the receipt and I bought the chair in March 2006, from Staples for £80.99.
Would I get anywhere trying to get a repair or replacement under the sale of goods act, I think it should last longer than that, or should I get a friend to weld it.

you bought an item 22 months ago and it didnt cost that much so IN MY OPINION i dont think they will repair it
BUT
you have nothing to lose ringing them and asking them what they can offer to you.0 -
An ordinary office chair costing £80.99 is fairly expensive if it's just a plain operators chair and it should last for a longer period than 22 months.
I'd say that you are within your rights to take it back to Staples and they should replace it for you or refund your money. They may offer to repair it for you and at this stage you may have to accept that. But looking at the picture supplied, I cannot see that it could be repaired. Given the length of time you've had it, they may want to make a deduction if they offer you a refund, and this would be reasonable.0
