I don't think so. We are getting one at the end of this month, and it has to be installed by a virgin media person. I asked how long it takes, they said 45mins even though we already have virgin cable tv installed... which means i don't think it is just a plug n play device.0

Should work as long as the person is subscribed to a package.
It shouldn't normally take 45 mins to install a v plus. Its a straight swap and they set up the tv preferences (eg HD) for you.0 -
The V+ Box belongs to Virgin Media, its not like Sky were you keep the box, you simply rent it.
As soon as you turn that box on it will 'call home' from that point its possible for Virgin to detect the box and stop any services to it0 -
The V+ box (like all other cable boxes) is tied to an account. Once that account is deactivated, the box is useless until you get it reactivated.- = I also recognise the Robins and beep for them = -0

If you want o have V+ you have to rent the box from Virgin. Your friend is presumably in breach of contract by giving it to you. You'd be better calling and getting them to install it, that way you'll have a new box as well rather than a second hand one. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

fair enough but just because you get it from virgin doesn't mean your going to get a new one. our last 3 replacements for our ordinay box have been reconditioned, one still said telewest on it.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

It should work if the person who gave it to you has an active subscription. If they don't they need to return the box to virgin otherwise they'll get charged for the box £150 upwards.0
