You need the clearance at the sides so the saucepan handles are not over another cooking ring. They can stick out from the sides of the cooker safely.

Good morning: The OP needs to provide further details i.e specific cooker ... where the manufacturer's instructions do not give clear guidance the recommended clearance for a free standing cooker is minimum 20mm either side to the base unit. Manufacturer's websites usually have manuals/specifications online....you could also call for details. Your local CORGI (who has 'cooker' qualifications...not all do) could advise you. Visit https://www.trustcorgi.com to find an installer and check his/her qualifications

Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)
  • You cannot deviate from the clearances in manufacturers instructions by even 1mm if there are nospecified clearances you must adhere to British Standards.

I asked my local corgi inspector about this because we frequently get called to "commission" such appliances by unqualified folk 90% of whom have got it wrong. to correct it requires all wall units to be rethought usually so we are not popular.

He told me a kitchen fitter in Hull was made by the HSE to go back to every kitchen he had got wrong imagine the huge repercusions and expense.

So how does this leave the diy person in their own home.

Simple you can't get a building regs compliance certificate so when you sell your house the buyers solicitor in asking for certificates will pick it up and you will either have to put the work right or pay for insurance
(probably £100 policy) to cover the purchaser.

What about free standing electric cookers? Are there any BS Standard requirements for positioning them?

Sorry to hijack thread, but we are thinking of installing one...
