South of Washington DC

Any recommends please for places or accomodations around the Carolinas, Virginia, Shenondoah, Smokey Mountains?

Wife and I will fly out to Washington for 2 weeks in the Summer, hire a car and drive as the fancy takes us. Anywhere intersting, exciting, historic, good value etc?

Have got the Rough Guide, so main bases covered.

THANKS!

How about Colonial Williamsburg, around 170 miles away in Virginia http://www.history.org/

Aside from the historical side, there's a Busch Gardens and large Water Park - in our 2 visits I've never seen either busy.

Also you have many large naval towns within an hour's drive - being a holiday area all have many entertainments for tourists.

Food and shopping are excellent too.
