Ipod on your TV

I've only just found out/realised you can connect your video Ipod to your TV :o
Is it right you can do it with a normal camcorder AV cable

Edit: before I go out and buy one I just wanted to know if this was true.

  • My understanding is that it depends upon which ipod you have. It does work with some generations of video models, not with others. (Much like the apple cables themselves, there are different versions of video out for different ipod generations.)
  • Just a note - this will not work with the new Ipod Classics or Nanos

You may want to consider a docking station, like Onkyo DS-A1 see http://www.onkyo.co.uk/

This enables remote control, onscreen display and charging of the iPod. It works fine with my Nano.

The cable should work with the 5th gen video ipods (glossy black or white) as they output both sound and video through the headphone jack.

However, the new 6th gen ipod 'classics' need an AV Cable that the apple store are selling for £35. On the newer classics, video signals are output through the dock connector rather than the headphone socket.

    Hope that helps.

That connector is not expensive, but if you buy from Maplin and find it does not work, they will give a refund if you return it within 14 days.

    You read my mind!
I'm off to maplin tomorrow to buy one for £6.99. Was hoping to get one for under a fiver, but better than the official cables for about £35

I might consider a docking station in the future, but I'll see how it goes with this.

    Thanks all for the advice.
