  • I have an fp 8 roland. Sometimes some particular keys when pressed alone give a very strange grimy sound..as if many keys are pressed simiultaneously. Does anyone know what the problem is? thanx

I unscrewed everything, ordered some hammers, "borrowed" a hammer from the high C for until the new ones arrive, but now I'm having a problem getting the keys and hammers back onto the frame. The hammers have to go through the frame from the top, but they also have to be fit into a slot on the keys....how does one juggle both? I've tried putting the hammers in first then fitting the key assembly on top, but can't get the hammers into the key slots.....also tried putting the hammers into the keys, then lowering the whole assembly onto the frame but that seems wrong as well..... any suggestions? Thanks for any advice!

You don't have to unscrew the key assembly from the frame nor do you have to unscrew the circuit boards underneath nor the octave assemblies.....which I did, which is why it was hard to get back together. All you have to do is get the black case off, then the heads of the keys are exposed and you can pry the key off it's pins at the head gently and remove it.....then the hammer just slips out to be fixed or replaced...... I unscrewed way too much --- I took the whole octave assembly off, then had probs getting each hammer and key back in....... if you do it the correct way, not my original way, it's pretty easy....

Well on a dull Sunday in Chester I finally opened up the case on my Roland fp1 and managed to swap the hammers on bottom a & b and top a, b & c for the 5 keys that were broken in the middle of my fp1.

Special thanks to sate, stniu and all the other respondees for getting me to have a go. It only took my 18 months to build up the courage. If I can do this anyone can!

Got to write to Roland now and get some new hammers for the keys. Probably going to order more than I need. Wonder if they would sell me a new set? Worth asking.......

    Thanks again everybody!

I'll second iwannamotorbike's thanks to everyone; it took me even longer than him to muster the courage to OPEN my FP-8...

but NOW I'm going to DO it, because you guys figured out precisely what is wrong with those keys.

BIG CHEERS to all you brave mechanics ;)!!!!
