I was referring to the statement as being misleading, sorry you're taking it so personally. The OP may have thought from your post that his laptop should last 6 years but the SOGA would only really cover him for 3/4 years as born out from small claims cases.

"By law you have up to six years to make a complaint, but this doesn't mean goods must last six years, they must last what most people would consider to be a ‘reasonable' length of time."
"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

From the support page of ACER

Please note that all Acer products purchased from PC World, Dixons or Curry's are supported via the store from which the product was purchased.

A kettle lasting less than 3 to 4 years? Wow!! I expect any kettle I buy to last longer than that... lol

I would suggest that mis-use caused the power socket fault. A common cause is the user tripping over the cable and straining the connector and breaking it. This is user damage and not covered under any consumer law.

The over heating is as a result of dust build up and/or mis-use of the laptop. It has probably been rested in a position where the ventilation intakes have been covered. The fan has been racing and thus reduced is working life well below that expected from a unit operated in accordance with the operation manual. Again this is a common user induced fault and not covered under warranty or consumer law.

    Good luck.

Its all very well quationg the SOG act that applies to the Seller-what if their no longer trading-i.e."WebElectricals" a lot of the cheaper web sites are "Fly by night"

Unfortunately, you cannot enforce your rights under the SOGA if the company no longer exists.

If you have a warranty/guarantee (in addition) with the manufacturer, you can use that route. Even if you don't have a warranty or if the item is outside of warranty, the manufactuer may offer to help FOC, if you contact them and explain the circumstances. They'll almost certainly be able to repair, for a charge - unless the item and/or parts are obsolete.

Otherwise, you'd need to find an independent service engineer and pay them.

At the end of the day, you can't enforce rights of any description agaionst a person/company that no longer exists. It's a bit like trying to get a dead person to stick to a promise they made in the past ;):D
