Could it be that your back problem was made worse by all the time you spent on the internet, prior to trying out the beds?0

Oldish, but probably about the same time my father was told to chuck out his hard 'orthapaedic' bed

I really find it hard to believe that the reports in the links were dated 2003. The bed industry (who have done a lot of reasearch and trials), have been telling people this long before then.
The report contradicts itself a bit by saying that soft mattresses are better, but then goes on to say medium to firm mattresses are best.
I find it funny that the study is carried out in Mallorca where the standard of mattresses is so bad that there are booming companies who import British made mattresses to sell out there.
The firm mattress thing only applied to open coil springs anyway.
If you can only afford an open coil sprung mattress then go for one that is 12.5gauge, abut is very deepquilted as this will help to contour to your body.0
