Buying a council house

Hello

My 1st post on these forums!

My girlfriend lives with her mum in a council house. She isnt on the rent book yet, but has been paying rent to her mother for over a year.

Is there any possibialty that she could buy the council house on behalf of her mum?

If not, is there any way around this?

She doesnt plan on doing it for at least 2-3 years.. So what could be done in the meantime that would allow her to buy it?

I thought that would be the case.. Could her mum hand over the tenancy to her daughter?

  • I think she could buy it jointly with her mum. I did the same with my Father (I wasn't named on the rent book, he was). This was some time ago though, and the rules may have changed??

Ok.. well her mum called the council and asked if her daughter could buy the house.. He said that shouldnt be a problem and gave her another number... Surley if a daughter wants to buy a house.. she may have a partner who would wish to buy in with her etc???

Her mum couldnt get a mortgate as her financial history is VERY bad.

    Views please.

My view is, thank goodness such people have the security of a council tenancy.
    Been away for a while.
  • Im going to call the council in the morning and explain that her mother wants her daughter and myself to buy the house.. And ask if we would still get the discount. See what they say.

I see that family members can use the right to buy scheme.. so as long as her daughter is paying towards the mortgage does it matter if its joint?!

Bear in mind that if the mother (who is presumably hopeless with money, hence the bad credit rating) fails to keep up the mortgage payments and the house is reposessed has no right to be rehoused by the council AFAIK anyway.

She won't get another house if she buys this one and if you (for example) have a family, fall out or canot afford it anymore then she will be homeless. What if things don;t work out with your gf, where will her mother go then? Will she be paying into the mortgage as well? She will have to live with your forever. If you choose to buy it and for whatever reason she wants to leave she will have to rent privately.

What are your intentions for her mother once you have this house? Just out of interest? How old is she? Are you prepared to have her living with you through her old age? I get the impression that you and your gf are in your mid 20's so the mother is what, in her 40's? So this could mean thst she will have to live with you for another 40 years or so. This is HER house after all, not her daughters. If you don't want her around then you really should let her keep her own house for security and you and your girlfriend need to go and find womewhere else to live and pay the usual going rate for it. Her mother will not eb able to get another council place to live, with a ppor financial hisptory she won't be able to rent either and even if you evict her then she won;t be eligable.

If any of the above happens she might then also have some claim to the house as the reason you was able to buy it at discount was because SHE has held the tenancy for all that time.

I think the council could offer me a 99% discount and I still wouldn't take it if it means my mother in law living with me for ever!!!!
