Train - Preston to London
Need to get a train from Preston to London on 12th Feb day return. Was hoping for as long as possible in town - definitely have to be there by lunch as we have already booked tickets for the Terracotta Warriors at 2.30. Any hints re split ticketing / promotional codes would be much appreciated - the cheapest ticket I can find is over £100 and I'm not paying that!

You don't make it clear what the fare you have found is - is it for one person (can definitely get it cheaper) or several (how many would help....)
Anyway - using the Virgin trains site on the 0849 train out and the 2046 back it's just under £50 return. Per person. £33.20 half saver out and £16.50 advance single back. A walk on ticket (off-peak) is £66.40 return - so way under £100.
Alternatively try going via Manchester - there are cheap e-tickets:

If you go via Birmingham on 4 singles it is £42.
Without knowing exactly when you are prepared to travel it is very difficult to find an exact fare. the more time you want in London the more expensive the fare, the more time you are willing to spend travelling, the cheaper. The choice is yours !0
