Earphones, playing through one side

Hi,
Im listening to music through my earphones, but it only plays through the right earbud. If i pull the jack half way out it plays through both.. I dont have any other earphones to see if they work fine. Anyone know what it could be? the laptop or the earphones

i reckon its the socket on the laptop, you must have something else you can test the headphones on in the house.0

tried them on my sisters ipod, and the phones work fine! Is it tricky to replace the earphone connector in my laptop?0
