If you go to Snow+Rock (snowandrock.com) or Ellis Brigham (ellis-brigham.com) you will spend more but will get soemthing that will last far longer than the cheapies. They will also keep out the rain etc far better. If you phone your order in tell them that your a British Mountainering Council (BMC) member and that you've lost your card, and they should give you a discount - Probably 10%. You could also say that your a BASI ski instructor, but as it isnt really ski gear that wont work, and they'll probably want details. PM me for help.
Just bear in mind that these tents are expensive, but far far higher quality. You may be tempted to go for The North Face tents. Don't. As much as they are high quality tents - these places dont sell crap - you are spending money on a name, much like Nike or Adidas.

Blimey!! You have just gasted my flabber!!
I would say I really disagree with the above (my opinion only) as it really depends what you want to tent for as paying £550 or £1,100 for a tent is steep by anyones standards (these are the largest tents they sell but actually dont even sleep 6 - only 4 people)!
I know the makes are good but like I say it depends what you want it for, personally i could buy a brand new 'cheapie' every time I went camping for two years rather than buy the cheaper of the two suggested here and save packing the thing away and just leave it at the campsie - lol!!
However if you are looking to get this thing to last years and years and use it most weekends then I'd look at something a bit more robust of course but if you are new to camping and just want to give it a go for a year or two then i'd go for the cheapies.
I've been camping for £20+ years and the tent i have bought is fine for fair weather occasional camping (not torrential storms or wind but fine for moderate english stylee weather).
Maybe you want to go for some thing in between the cheap and the expensive and the other options look good for that. Like I say it depends on your needs?
BTW ash333 - I dont mean to offend i just didnt think that the suggestion was very money savingOfficial DFW Nerd 2100 -

Lets just do some basic maths here -
One weekend in two per year - thats 26 weekends.
26 of your cheapie tents at £20 = £520.
Now if the other tent were to last 20 years:
20x£520 = £10400 - over ten grand.
Moneysaving or what?
But seriously, if you are new to camping you are probably better off getting a cheapie tent. If you enjoy it dont bother with a midrange - you will siply have to upgrade later and it will be wasted money - just spend £500 on a good tent and you'll never need another. (Ok - pushing it but it'll last you a lot longer and work out cheaper)
On another point, if you go camping regularly, if people know that that is your Orange tent over there than you will get to know people much faster as you will meet people that you have previously met at other campsites as they will notice your tent much as your car etc.IF YOU LIKE MY POST PLEASE CLICK "THANK YOU!"

I see your point but I now see we are coming from different angles!
current camping (realistic) each year = 4 (or 5) times (only go once a month thru summer) @ £70 per tent = £280 per year.... 2 years = £560 (although as we both know I only have one tent that I expect to last that long = £70)
I'm afraid unless its sunny you wont get me taking three kids to a campsite (the thought of it frightens me enough! lol!) so tend only to camp in the summer months when we dont have plans i.e. weddings/birthday parties to go to so will probably get one large holiday and 4 or more smaller weekend ones.....
Which is why I think we are talking from different ends of the spectrum! Guess it depends what the OP wants and if you are camping 26 weeks out of 52 then defo get the more expensive one (although IMO I still think circa £300ish should suffice) but if you are a newbie go for a cheapie.
I also personally would prefer to update my tent every 2 or 3 years as they get a lot lighter and easier to erect etc and thinking of the family tent we had 10 years ago it would be a bit of a monster compared to most tents around at the moment. As i say so wouldn't be looking at a long term investment anyway as with a young family our needs are always changing as to whether we need more or less space etc...
oh yeah, and wouldn't have £500 to spend on a tent anyways! lol! the kids see to thatOfficial DFW Nerd 2100
